Mtn PA Y-Cross is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Split Wing Nasty 22 personnel, using pre-snap motion to shift numbers before the fake. Off the run fake, the Y runs a deep cross from one side of the formation all the way across the field, while a second receiver runs a corner or deep out breaking outside, and the third route works a shorter out to the boundary. The blocking is play-action protection with the backfield selling run action before the crosser develops. Primary read progression starts with the deep out or corner route on the play side, then works to the Y-cross crossing the field as the second read, with the underneath out as the checkdown against tight coverage.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and shell alignment, a two high shell with soft corners signals zone and tells you the Y-cross will have a defined throwing lane once it clears the middle linebacker. Watch the motion defender, if a defensive back or linebacker follows the motion man across the formation that confirms man coverage and opens the crosser against trailing defenders. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker and any user lurk defender sitting in the shallow to intermediate zone, since a well timed drop can jump the Y-cross route and force an incompletion or turnover. This play struggles against zone blitz packages that bring five rushers while dropping a linebacker into the crosser lane, so recognize disguised pressure by watching for late linebacker walk ups pre-snap. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can also take away the shorter out route, so be ready to climb the progression to the deep corner or cross rather than forcing the checkdown.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, since a defender following the motion man across the formation confirms man coverage and opens up the Y-cross as a high value throw. Sell the play-action fake fully by holding the ball fake animation out before resetting your eyes downfield, this manipulates linebackers and freezes underneath defenders in zone. Against single high safety shells, prioritize the deep corner or out route on the play side since the cross will have less room to work against a rotated safety. Pair this call with Mtn PA Slide or Motion PA Mesh earlier in a drive to establish the same motion and run action tendencies, then hit this deep shot when the defense starts jumping the underneath routes. This play is best called on second and medium or early first down when defenses are more likely to respect the run fake and bite on linebacker flow.
