Defensive Reads
Watch the safety depth before the snap, a single high safety cheating toward the deep corner route signals the defense expects play-action and may abandon underneath mesh support. Track defenders assigned to the motion man, if they slide with him across the formation you are facing man coverage and the mesh crossers become the priority read. Key linebacker depth at the snap, linebackers biting on the play-action fake open up the crossing routes for easy completions underneath. Look for a user-controlled defender sitting in a lurk spot near the mesh point, this indicates the defense is hunting to jump the crossers and you should reset to the corner route or flat. Zone shells with underneath defenders sinking into the mesh area can clog the crossing routes, so check if the flat route is being left uncovered as the zone beater outlet.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you are almost certainly getting man coverage and can bank on the mesh crossers winning.
Sell the play-action fake with a full commitment on the stick to hold linebackers and freeze the defense for the deep corner route.
On third and medium, hit the mesh crossers as your primary read since the natural rub creates instant separation against man defenders trailing through traffic.
Pair this play with Mtn PA Y-Cross earlier in a series so the defense respects the same motion and play-action look, then counter with the mesh crossers when they start jumping the corner route.
Against aggressive man blitzes, get rid of the ball quickly to the flat route since the mesh concept takes extra time to develop and the offensive line is committed to a play-action set.
