Mtn Read Lead Option lines up out of Shotgun Split Wing Nasty with 22 personnel and shows a single receiver split wide while the rest of the formation stays tight to the line. The diagram shows a quick option route out of the backfield (yellow) crossing behind a lead blocker (red) as the offensive line slides to handle the point of attack, giving this the look of a run/pass hybrid built around an option read rather than a standard dropback pass. The primary read is the option route defender: if he sits, throw the quick option route underneath, and if he flows outside with the lead blocker, get the ball out before the crease closes.
Defensive Reads
Key the flat or underneath zone defender assigned to the option route area, since his depth tells you whether he is sitting on the quick option or bailing into a deeper zone. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: if they crash hard toward the lead blocker, the option route will be wide open in the vacated underneath zone. Man coverage on the option receiver with no safety help over the top is the biggest green light to trust the option read immediately. Zone shells with a linebacker spying the option route release can shut this down, especially if that defender stays home and doesn't bite on the lead blocker action. Watch for user-controlled defenders sitting the option route or lurking in the throwing lane, since this is the primary counter that turns the option read into a turnover risk.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, check if the defense is showing man or zone by watching the flat defender over the option route release.
If the linebacker assigned to the option route cheats inside pre-snap, hot route the split wide receiver into a quick out to hold the corner and open the option lane.
This play works best on early downs (1st and 2nd, short to medium yardage) where defenses are more likely to sit in base looks instead of loading the box.
Pair this with Motion Read Option or Motion Power O from the same set to keep the defense guessing between run action and the option pass look, since both share similar backfield motion.
Use Mtn PA Y-Cross later in a series once the defense starts biting on the option route, since the play-action look off similar formation shifts second level defenders out of position.
