RPO Glance Post out of Shotgun Slot Right pairs an inside zone run look with a three-man route package that reads run fits before the snap. The backside X runs a vertical post to stretch the deep half, the slot receiver runs a quick glance route breaking inside, and the TE runs a flat conversion route to the play side, giving the quarterback a run key and two short/intermediate throw windows off the mesh point. This is a true RPO built for light boxes and off-man coverage, with the post acting as the home run alert if the safety bites on the run action.
Defensive Reads
Watch the safety depth and rotation before the snap, a single high safety that creeps down into the box is your green light for the post throw. If the linebackers step up hard on the run fake, the glance route sits in the vacated underneath zone for an easy completion. Man coverage on the slot receiver with no safety help over the top means the post has a favorable one on one matchup down the field. Zone coverage with a robber or lurk defender sitting in the shallow middle zone will jump the glance route, so be ready to reset to the run or the TE flat. Blitz-heavy fronts with extra defenders crashing downhill make the quick glance and flat throws the safer answer since the post takes too long to develop against pressure.
Usage Tips
Count the box pre-snap and if there are six or fewer defenders in the box, hand it off or pull the glance route based on the linebacker flow. Use the post as your alert throw against single high safety looks where the safety is reading run action, since it hits an explosive shot play. Hot route the TE flat to a quick out or seam if you see a corner sitting on the flat zone to keep the post window clean. Pair this play with RPO Alert Glance and RPO Alert Bubble in the same set so the defense cannot key run fits based on formation alone. Best called on early downs, first and ten or second and short, when defenses are more likely to load the box against the run action.
