RPO Glance Post is a run pass option out of Shotgun Slot Right that pairs an inside handoff look with a two man read side route combo. The backside receiver runs a vertical post stem up the numbers while the underneath receiver works a quick glance/shallow crossing route, and on the play side the slot receiver runs a short out that breaks upfield into a wheel style climb. The quarterback's primary read progression starts with the alley defender or overhang linebacker to decide run versus throw, then works to the glance route underneath before looking to the post shot if the defense sells the run fake.

Defensive Reads

Key the flat or curl to flat defender immediately after the snap since his reaction tells you run or pass on the RPO. If the linebacker crashes downhill to fill the run fit, throw the glance route behind him for a quick easy completion. Look at the single high safety pre-snap, if he is shaded away from the post side or bites on the run action the post route will open up for an explosive gain. Cover 3 and man coverage with an aggressive robber or lurk defender can jump the glance route, so be ready to layer the post throw over the top if you see that threat develop. Beware disguised blitzes where the slot corner or overhang crashes the backfield, since that removes the quarterback's clean pocket and forces a rushed decision on the RPO read.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and pull the ball to throw the glance if the defense is stacked to defend the run. Use the post route as your explosive shot play answer against single high safety looks or when you see the flat defender crash down on the RPO key. Motion or shift can help you diagnose man versus zone before the snap, watch for the slot corner sitting inside which tips zone coverage underneath. Pair this play with HB Iso or Inside Zone Split in your call sheet so the defense has to respect the run fake, which sets up the RPO glance and post shots later in the series. Use this on early downs in normal or ace personnel situations where defenses are more likely to load the box and give up the glance or post window.
