Breakdown

Smash Return is a Cover 2 beater run from Shotgun Bunch Offset with 11 personnel, using pre-snap motion out of the backfield to help identify the coverage shell before the snap. The bunch releases a corner route to the flag from the outside receiver and a return/comeback route underneath from the slot, stacking a high-low read on the boundary corner, while the third bunch receiver runs a deep crossing route from the backfield motion man that clears space underneath. The blocking scheme keeps the offensive line in max protect with no visible screen or run action, making this a straight dropback passing concept with the primary read progression working corner route first to attack the deep half defender, then coming down to the return route sitting underneath if the corner sinks too deep.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify safety depth and corner alignment on the bunch side, deep splits from both safeties suggest Cover 2 or Cover 4, which this concept is designed to attack. Watch the flat defender after the snap, if he sinks to take away the return route the corner route should be wide open behind him in the deep half. User the deep half safety on the bunch side if you are on defense, since this play lives on stressing that defender vertically with the corner route. Man coverage with underneath linebackers spying the motion man can disrupt the timing of the return route, look for linebackers cheating toward the bunch pre-snap as a blitz or man key. Cover 3 or Cover 1 with a deep third defender rolled over the bunch can take away the corner route entirely, forcing the quarterback to live on the underneath return route.

Usage Tips

Motion the backfield player pre-snap and watch how the defense adjusts, if a linebacker or safety follows across the formation you likely have man coverage and can trust the corner route to win one on one.

Against true Cover 2 shells, key the flat defender and outside corner leverage, if the corner sits low expect the smash concept to open up the corner route over the top for an explosive gain.

Use the return route as your check down against Cover 3 or Cover 4 looks where the deep corner route gets taken away by a deep quarter or third defender.

Pair this play with Curl Flat or Z Spot from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick underneath throws and the deeper smash concept, this forces defenders to respect both levels.

Best called on second and medium or third and short distances where the return route provides a safe underneath option if the defense disguises a two high shell into man coverage.
