Defensive Reads
Watch for blitz indicators pre-snap such as linebackers creeping up to the line or safeties rotating down, this play is designed to punish that aggression. If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 with deep zone drops, the vertical routes will occupy the deep defenders and leave the screen wide open underneath. User-controlled defenders sitting outside the tackle box or reading the backfield quickly can jump the screen and blow it up before blockers get set, so avoid this play if the defense shows a spy or scrape exchange look. Man coverage that follows the HB motion across the formation signals a green light for the screen since the defender is now out of position to make the tackle. Against Cover 2 or Cover 6 shells with linebackers sitting in short zones, the screen can get sniffed out quickly, use the shallow drag as your outlet instead.
Usage Tips
Call this against defenses that show blitz pre-snap since the vertical clear-outs and cross route are designed to occupy underneath defenders and open the screen lane.
Use the HB motion to identify man coverage versus zone before the snap, if a defender follows the back across the formation you know you are getting man coverage and the screen has a favorable blocking angle.
Hot route the shallow drag receiver to a hook or flat route if you are facing a heavy zone shell that sits underneath and clogs the screen lane.
Pair this play with HB Draw and Outside Zone in the same set to keep defenses honest on run fits, since the run action forces linebackers to bite up and creates even more space for the screen.
Best used on early downs or third and short when defenses are pinning their ears back, since blitz-happy linebackers and edge rushers are exactly what this screen is designed to exploit.
