Z Spot deploys the bunch trio into a classic Spot concept: the inside bunch receiver runs a quick corner route to the flag, the middle bunch receiver runs a shallow flat/drag underneath, and the outside bunch receiver breaks into a spot/hitch settling in the void behind the flat and in front of the corner. The lone receiver on the backside runs a deep corner cut vertically upfield as a one on one shot, while the running back releases out of the backfield on a wide swing/flat route to the opposite side for a checkdown or screen outlet. This is a Cover 3 beater built to attack the deep third and flat defender conflict with the flat to corner stretch, and the primary read progression starts with the spot route underneath, moves to the flag route for the vertical shot against soft zone, and finishes with the running back swing as the checkdown against pressure.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify the safety alignment: a single high safety usually signals Cover 3 or Cover 1, both of which the flag and spot combo attacks in the flat to deep third seam. Watch the flat defender's depth at the snap, if he sinks too far to cover the corner route the spot sits wide open underneath for an easy pitch and catch. Man coverage with press corners on the bunch receivers is vulnerable to the natural rub created by the bunch alignment, so look for immediate separation off the release. Cover 2 with two deep safeties can squeeze the flag route, so check if the corner jumps the underneath spot route, that leaves the deep flag or backside corner route as the answer. User controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow zone can jump the spot route, so be ready to reset to the flat swing route or the vertical shot if you see a defender crashing down early.
Usage Tips
Diagnose the safety shell before the snap: two deep safeties invites the flag route on a hard sell to the sideline, while a single high safety means the spot route and corner combo will stress the flat defender in Cover 3.
Use the shallow spot route as your immediate answer versus zone blitzes or five and six man pressure since it settles quickly and gives the quarterback a rhythm throw.
Hot route the backside receiver into a slant or quick out if you see man coverage with no help over the top, turning this into a solid man beater rather than just a zone concept.
Pair this play with Curl Flat or Spacing from the same set to keep defenses guessing between quick game answers and the deeper flag shot off similar bunch alignment.
Best called on second and medium or third and short to medium since the spot route offers a safe completion while the flag route stays available as an explosive answer against zone drops.
