Breakdown

HB Draw out of Shotgun Bunch Offset is a delayed run play designed to bait pass rushers upfield before handing the ball off to the HB, who follows his blockers through a gap that opens once the defensive line commits to the pass rush. The offensive line sets up in a pass protection look before engaging run blocks at the second level, and the bunch set to one side pulls defenders out of the box or forces man coverage traffic that widens run lanes. This is a pure run play (not a play-action or RPO), and the primary read progression is patience first: let the blocking develop, identify the first crease off the play side guard or center, and cut off the flow of the linebackers as they react late.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check if the defense is in a two high shell or single high safety look, since two high shells with fewer box defenders open up more room for the delayed handoff. Watch linebacker depth at the snap. If linebackers are creeping toward the line expecting run blitz, this play loses value, but if they show pass drop keys or spy alignment, HB Draw exploits their momentum. Identify man coverage versus zone coverage by watching the cornerbacks over the bunch. Man coverage that turns and runs with receivers creates natural running lanes since defenders in man turn their backs to the backfield. Key on user controlled defenders lurking near the line of scrimmage. A user spy sitting in the middle of the field can diagnose and blow up the draw quickly, so avoid this call if you see a defender parked in a hook zone with eyes on the backfield. Beware of nano blitz packages or double A gap pressure, since the delayed blocking scheme cannot recover fast enough against interior pressure that arrives before the mesh point.

Usage Tips

Call this on passing downs like second and long or third and medium when the defense shows blitz or pass shell pre-snap, since draw plays punish aggressive pass rush lanes and overzealous linebacker blitzes.

Check the box count before the snap. If you see six or more defenders stacked in the box, audibile away from HB Draw since there will not be enough natural cutback lanes.

Use the bunch alignment to draw safety rotation or man coverage matchups away from the core of the formation, which thins out the second level defenders responsible for filling run gaps.

Pair this play with Outside Zone, Inside Zone Split, and Counter Y in the same play calling sequence so the defense cannot key on the delayed draw action versus your other ground game concepts.

Avoid calling HB Draw against defenses that show heavy inside blitz packages or A gap pressure looks, since the delayed mesh point gets blown up before the hole develops.

On offense, mix in PA Dig or PA Read from the same formation to keep linebackers honest and slow their downhill trigger on future draw calls.
