Inside Zone Split is a pure zone run play out of Shotgun Bunch Offset with 11 personnel. The offensive line steps in unison to the play side, working combo blocks at the point of attack while the HB reads the frontside cutback lane off the diagram arrow. This is a downhill zone beater designed to attack gaps created by defensive flow, not a man or play-action concept, with the primary read being the frontside double team into the backside cutback if the defense overpursues.
Check the linebacker depth pre-snap, stacked or blitzing backers signal an aggressive run fit that inside zone can gash if they overcommit to one gap. Look for the defensive line shading to one side, since inside zone with combo blocks beats slanting fronts by climbing to the second level quickly. Post-snap, key the play side defensive end and Mike linebacker, if both flow hard playside the cutback lane opens for a big gain. This play struggles against disciplined gap control defenses that stay square and against user controlled defenders spying the cutback lane. Heavy blitz packages with edge pressure can beat this if the offensive line loses the double team before the back can press the hole.
Run this out of Bunch Offset to disguise run intent since the bunch alignment mirrors several pass concepts in this set like Curl Flat and Spacing. Use it early in a series on second and short or first and ten to establish tempo and set up Counter Y later as a change of pace. Watch for stacked boxes pre-snap, if the defense shows 8 in the box, consider audibling to Outside Zone or HB Draw instead. Trust the frontside double team and let the HB press the line before making one cut, avoid dancing in the backfield against fast flowing linebackers. Pair this with PA Read or PA Dig off the same look to keep defenses honest once they start crashing downhill on early downs.
