Outside Zone out of Shotgun Bunch Offset is a zone run play designed to stretch the defense horizontally before the ball carrier presses the edge and cuts upfield off his blockers' leverage. The offensive line and TE execute zone steps, working combo blocks at the point of attack and climbing to the second level to seal off linebackers, while the bunch offset alignment creates natural rub potential on the edge to slow down flowing defenders. The primary read for the running back is a track from the playside tackle to the edge defender, deciding to bounce outside, bend into the alley, or cut back based on how the defense flows and whether the backside is cut off.
Defensive Reads
Watch for safety rotation before the snap, since a single high safety usually means the box is lighter and the edge should be cutback friendly. Key the playside defensive end and outside linebacker to see if they are crashing hard down the line or staying disciplined on the edge, since fast crash technique opens the cutback lane. Look for user controlled linebackers flowing too fast toward the sideline, which leaves a natural cutback window behind the zone blocks. This play struggles against gap exchange stunts and scrape exchange blitzes where the edge defender sits and the linebacker replaces him outside, so be ready to cut it back immediately if you see that exchange trigger. Cover 3 and Cover 1 with an overhang defender flowing hard tend to shut this down quickly, so switch to an inside zone or gap scheme if you see that shell consistently.
Usage Tips
Attack light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, since Outside Zone loses value against heavy fronts that can outnumber the edge. Use the bunch offset motion or a receiver shift pre-snap to identify if the defense is playing man or zone, since man coverage defenders that follow motion tightly signal a good run down. Hot route the backside receiver into a quick slant or leave him on a go route to hold the backside safety honest and discourage cutback support. This play pairs well with HB Draw and Read Option from the same set since all three hit similar landmarks but attack different gaps, keeping linebackers guessing on run fits. Run this on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay ahead of the chains, and mix in Cheat Outside Zone as a tempo variation to keep the defense from diagnosing your run keys.
