PA Read out of Shotgun Bunch Offset opens with a play-action fake to sell run action before the QB works a levels-style progression on the boundary. Defensive Reads
Identify single-high safety alignment before the snap, this play is designed to attack Cover 1 and Cover 3 shells where the crosser can work behind linebacker flow. Watch for a hard squeeze from underneath defenders on the play-action fake, aggressive linebacker crash opens up both the crosser and the flat route in the intermediate window. Track the flat defender and cornerback on the backside comeback route, a good user lurk sitting in that zone can jump the comeback and bait a mistimed throw. Look for two-high safety shells (Cover 2 or Cover 4), these tend to take away the deep comeback and force the QB into the shorter flat or checkdown options. Blitz packages that bring extra defenders off the edge can beat this play before the fake fully develops, so watch for pre-snap indicators like walked-up safeties or overloaded fronts.
Usage Tips
Sell the play-action fake fully before your first read, holding the ball on the mesh point to freeze linebackers and get safeties to bite on the run action.
Key the middle of field safety before the snap: if it is single-high, work the deep crosser immediately since the play is designed to isolate it against man coverage.
Use the flat route as your check-down against zone drops or when the pass rush closes the pocket quickly, especially on shorter down and distance.
Hot route the backside comeback into a deep out if you see a lot of cushion, this creates an instant conflict for the flat defender and cornerback in split zone shells.
Pair this with Speed Dig or PA Dig from the same set to keep linebackers guessing between crossers and digs, then mix in HB Draw or Inside Zone Split once the defense starts jumping the pass action.
