Defensive Reads

Track linebacker depth at the snap; stacked linebackers who fly downhill quickly can beat this play by squeezing the FB lead block before it develops. Look for safeties creeping into the box pre-snap, which signals run support and should make you favor the QB keep to the edge away from the extra defender. Post-snap, key the backside end's reaction off the mesh point; if he sits and reads rather than crashing, the defense is likely playing assignment football and the give read becomes the higher value option. This play struggles against aggressive edge defenders in scrape exchange technique and disciplined linebackers who stay square, since they can shut down both the keep and the dive without overcommitting.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, check the box count and see if the defense has removed a defender to the flat or brought a safety down, since this play thrives against light boxes with six or fewer in the box.
Identify whether the defense is in a read option assignment defense; if the backside end sits and waits, key on giving the ball to the HB since the lead FB block will still generate a crease inside.
Use motion or a check with X to confirm the play side before the snap so you know which direction the FB lead flows.
