Zone Alert Bubble is an RPO out of Pistol Strong Slot Open that pairs an inside zone run look with a bubble screen to the slot. The diagram shows the offensive line blocking down for the zone run while the outside receiver runs a vertical stem to clear space, and the inside slot receiver settles underneath for the bubble catch with the running back staying home as a lead blocker or check. Your primary read is the flow of the second level defenders: if the linebackers and slot defender crash toward the run fit, throw the bubble immediately, otherwise hand off the zone read or take off with the quarterback depending on scheme rules.
Pre-snap, identify if the slot cornerback or nickel is playing outside leverage or crashing down, since that tells you whether the bubble or the run is the better option. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they step up hard into the run fit, the bubble screen has room to work behind them. Cover 3 shells with the corner sitting deep and the underneath defender flowing to run support get exposed by the quick bubble throw before help can rotate over. Man coverage with the slot defender playing tight technique struggles to react to the horizontal bubble concept, giving the receiver a numbers advantage. Watch for a lurking safety or linebacker sitting in the shallow flat zone, a disciplined defender who reads the screen instead of biting on run action can jump the route and blow up the play.
Check the slot defender pre-snap, if he is playing tight or shows blitz intent, the bubble is your instant answer against man coverage.
Use this on early downs in run and pass balanced situations to keep defenses honest and force linebackers to respect both the zone run and the perimeter screen.
Pair this with HB Zone or Inside Zone Split from the same set so defenses cannot key on run versus pass just from personnel or motion.
If the defense sells out to stop the bubble by rotating a corner or safety down, counter with Y Cross or Mesh Dig from this set to attack the vacated middle of the field.
Against aggressive nano blitz packages, get the ball out on the bubble quickly since the RPO read lets you take advantage of overpursuing edge rushers and blitzing linebackers.
