HB Dive out of Pistol Strong Slot Open is a downhill run play that sends the HB straight through the A gap behind the pistol alignment. The offensive line blocks a standard down block scheme, with the fullback area vacant here since this is a 20 personnel look with no true lead blocker shown, so the interior linemen rely on double teams and combo blocks at the point of attack to seal the gap. This is a pure run play with no play-action or RPO tag attached, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the play side A gap first, then bounce to the backside cutback lane if the initial hole is clogged by an extra defender in the box.
Defensive Reads
Watch for a stacked box pre-snap since HB Dive struggles against eight-man fronts with linebackers creeping up to the line of scrimmage. Key on the defensive tackle alignment over the play side guard, if he is shaded hard into the A gap the dive will not have room to develop. Post-snap, track the middle linebacker's fill speed since a fast-flowing Mike linebacker can beat the blocking scheme to the hole and blow up the play before the back reaches the line. This run is neutral to man versus zone coverage since it is a pure run play, so the real defensive counter is front alignment and gap discipline rather than coverage shell. User-controlled defensive linemen who shoot gaps aggressively on the snap can diagnose this quickly, so defenses that consistently jump the dive read should be countered with misdirection runs from the same set.
Usage Tips
Use HB Dive on early downs in short yardage or when you need to establish tempo against a defense that is showing light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle area.
Check pre-snap for a defensive tackle shaded directly over the play side A gap since this alignment can clog the dive lane before the back even gets the handoff.
Pair this play with HB Zone and Inside Zone Split in the same set so defenses cannot key on gap direction based on formation alone, forcing linebackers to hesitate on run fits.
If the defense stacks the box with eight or more defenders after seeing dive success, switch to Mesh or Y Cross from the same set to attack vacated coverage with quick game passes.
Avoid calling this against aggressive nano blitz packages that send extra defenders straight up the middle presnap since there is no lead blocker to pick up the extra rusher.
