PA Slide is a play-action pass out of Pistol Strong Slot Open that uses a run fake to hold the linebackers before working a horizontal stretch to the boundary. The play design shows two receivers to the closed side running deep comeback routes stacked vertically to clear space, while the TE runs a slide route across the middle from the strongside that settles in the flat area vacated by the play fake. The backside slot receiver runs a shallow drag underneath, giving the quarterback a levels concept with the drag as the checkdown and the TE slide as the primary read against zone drops. This is a play-action zone beater built to punish linebackers who bite on the run fake and to create a clean sight-read progression from the TE slide to the drag.
Defensive Reads
Key the middle linebacker and strongside linebacker at the snap, if they step up hard on the run fake the TE slide route will be wide open in the void behind them. Watch for a user-controlled defender sitting in the shallow zone or spying the TE, since that lurk threat is the primary counter to this concept. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with aggressive linebacker run fits are the most vulnerable, the slide route sits right in the seam vacated by run support. Man coverage with no safety help over the top can be beaten by the deep comebacks if the corners bite on the initial vertical release. Blitz-heavy defenses that bring extra rushers off the edge can disrupt the play-action fake before routes develop, so recognize overload blitz alignments pre-snap and be ready to check into a quicker route or hot route the drag as an outlet.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs, second and short or first and ten, to sell the run fake with credibility against defenses stacking the box. Check the pre-snap safety alignment: single high safeties are a green light since the TE slide will find soft grass underneath the deep comebacks. Hot route the backside drag into a deeper crosser if you see man coverage across the formation, since the natural pick action from the two comeback releases can spring separation. Pair this play with HB Dive or Inside Zone Split earlier in a drive to set up the linebacker bite on the fake, then call PA Slide once you see linebackers stepping up on run action. Use play action rollout protections wisely, keep the fullback or extra blocker in versus known blitz teams since the naked side can be exposed if the edge is not accounted for.
