Flat Combo out of Pistol Strong Slot Open is a quick-hitting horizontal passing concept built to attack the flat and underneath zones. The diagram shows a vertical route from the number 1 receiver up top, a short out-and-up breaking route from the inline slot, a flat route working underneath toward the sideline, and a shallow drag crossing route from the backside that settles into the vacated flat area. This is a zone beater designed to stress underneath defenders horizontally, with the primary read progression starting on the flat route, then working to the drag/cross underneath, and using the vertical shot as a hot alert if the coverage bites down.
Defensive Reads
Presnap, check safety depth and alignment, since a single high safety shell signals Cover 3 and opens up the flat and drag combo underneath. Watch the flat defender's assignment at the snap, if a linebacker is asked to cover the flat he will struggle with the route's quickness and width. Key on the cornerback aligned over the number 1 receiver, if he presses or plays inside leverage the vertical route can win outside on a fade or go concept. Beware of Cover 2 with a hard corner and safety over the top, since that shell squeezes the vertical route and can bait the quarterback into throwing the flat into a jumping linebacker. If the defense shows blitz presnap with the slot defender crashing, the drag route becomes the quick outlet since it settles into the vacated area behind the rush.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs or third and short when defenses are likely to sit in shallow zone coverage like Cover 2 or Cover 3 sink drops.
Presnap, identify if the flat defender is a linebacker or a corner playing off, since a slower linebacker in that area gets exposed by the flat route immediately after the snap.
If you see man coverage presnap with no safety help over the top, hot route the number 1 receiver's vertical into a shorter option or trust the one on one matchup against a cornerback for a big play down the sideline.
Pair this play with Mesh or Mesh Dig from the same set to keep defenses honest, since both concepts attack similar underneath zones but with different spacing and timing.
Against user-controlled defenders sitting on the flat, look to the drag route crossing the field since it exploits vacated middle zones once the flat defender jumps the shorter throw.
