Defensive Reads
Watch the two underneath receivers at the snap since if they are running full speed through the mesh point without contact, the offense is likely facing zone coverage and the dig window will be tighter. Key the middle linebacker depth presnap, because a shallow drop suggests they are sitting on the dig route and will jump the throw if the quarterback is late. If corners are pressed at the line with no safety help over the top, this is a strong indicator of man coverage, and the user should manually control a linebacker to shadow the mesh crossers and disrupt the rub. Look for a delayed blitz off the edge, since the mesh concept holds blockers in but a late-arriving rusher can collapse the pocket before the dig fully develops. Two deep safeties with corners playing off is a coverage shell that shuts this down quickly, since it clogs the vertical route and flat combo while linebackers have clean vision on the crossers.
Usage Tips
Presnap, identify if the defense is showing man coverage by checking for tight alignment on the two crossers, since the mesh point is designed to rub off man defenders and create separation.
If you see a single high safety with press corners, the dig becomes your first read because it sits down in the vacated middle zone behind the mesh traffic.
Against zone shells with two deep safeties, work the flat route and the outside vertical for the high-low read since the underneath crossers will be sat on by linebackers.
Use this play on second or third and medium situations where you need a chain-moving completion, since the mesh concept naturally creates YAC opportunities for shifty slot receivers.
Pair this with Y Cross or Shakes from the same set to keep the defense guessing between crossing concepts and vertical shots, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their zone drops.
