Read Option lines up out of Pistol Ace Slot with 12 personnel, showing two receivers split wide and a stacked pistol backfield with the QB reading the mesh point off the HB. The offensive line blocks down at the point of attack while the QB reads the edge defender to decide between handing off on the inside track or pulling and attacking the perimeter himself. This is a run play built as a zone read style RPO look, not a designed pass, and it beats defenses that crash hard on the dive or that leave the edge unblocked without a disciplined read defender.
Defensive Reads
Key the play side defensive end or outside linebacker at the snap, if he squeezes down to take the dive the QB should have already committed to pulling it outside. Watch linebacker depth pre-snap, stacked or blitzing linebackers crashing downhill will shut down the interior run but open up the edge keep for big yardage. User-controlled defenders spying the QB are the biggest threat to this play, if the defense pulls a linebacker or safety down to spy, both the dive and the keep lanes get compressed. Check safety alignment before the snap, single high safety shells tend to leave the edge softer against the keep, while two high shells with quick corner support can rally fast to shut down the perimeter. Nano blitzes off the edge with an unblocked rusher crashing the mesh point are the counter to this play, since the QB has no time to make a clean read before the ball is either handed off late or the rusher blows up both options.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is stacking the box or staying base, since a light box with 6 or fewer defenders is the green light to run this every time.
Watch the edge defender (DE or OLB) alignment before the snap, if he is crashing hard inside on run downs you want to pull and keep, if he is sitting wide you hand it off on the dive track.
Use this on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) to keep defenses honest before dialing up HB Power O or HB Counter later in the series once they start cheating outside.
Pair this with PA Boot or PA Ctr Waggle from the same Ace Slot Pistol set so the defense has to respect both the run action and the play-action pass off similar formation looks.
If the defense shows blitz pre-snap with extra defenders creeping to the line, consider hot routing a receiver into a quick option route or bailing to a called pass, since Read Option struggles against overloaded fronts with no blocker assigned to the read man.
