Post-snap, if the end sits and reads the mesh point instead of attacking upfield, that is a sign of a disciplined read defense and you should favor the handoff to the backside cutback lane. If a user-controlled defender flashes down hard off the edge before the mesh point resolves, this is your green light to pull and get to the flat quickly before the alley defender can react. Watch linebacker depth at the second level, stacked or crashing linebackers on early downs signal run blitz recognition and should push you toward a hard pull and edge track rather than a handoff into a loaded box. Nickel and dime packages with lighter boxes and faster edge defenders tend to shut down the QB keep option, so lean on the give against those personnel groupings.
