Breakdown

PA Ctr Waggle sells a center run fake out of Pistol before the QB rolls out on a waggle action to the flat side. From the diagram, both outside receivers run vertical routes that break outward (corner routes) from the numbers, one TE runs a deep in from the slot toward the middle of the field, and the other TE releases into the flat underneath the rollout to give the QB a checkdown. This is a play-action rollout designed to attack zone defenses that bite on the run fake, with the primary read progression going from the outside corner route to the deep in-cut crosser, and finally down to the flat route as the checkdown option.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they step up hard on the run fake this play should have wide open throwing lanes underneath. Identify single high safety alignment before the snap, that shell is more vulnerable to the corner routes since there is only one defender to cover both deep outside thirds. Post-snap, key on any user-controlled defender flowing with the QB on the rollout, that lurk defender can jump the flat route or the shallow in-cut. Cover 2 shells with deep half safeties can squeeze the corner routes, so be ready to work the deep in-cut TE as the zone beater against that look. Fast defensive ends or edge rushers who contain the rollout can force the QB to throw off platform, so recognize contain pressure and get rid of the ball to the flat quickly.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs in run-heavy personnel counts so the run fake actually threatens linebackers and safeties.

Check for single high safety looks pre-snap since the corner routes up top have a better chance to stretch the deep half against Cover 3 rotation.

If the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 4 shell, hot route the deep in-cut TE to a shallow drag to give the QB a faster underneath answer against soft zone drops.

Pair this play with HB Power O and HB Counter earlier in a series so linebackers start cheating downhill, making the waggle fake more effective on this call.

Roll fully outside the tackle box before throwing to avoid intentional grounding and to keep the flat route as a true safety valve against contain rushers.
