HB Power O out of Pistol Ace Slot is a gap-scheme run play with a pulling guard leading the HB through the hole for a downhill, physical run. The diagram shows a standard 12 personnel look with two WRs split wide and no route concepts drawn, confirming this is a pure run play rather than a pass or RPO look. The blocking front shows the line down blocking to the play side while a puller wraps around to kick out the edge defender, and the primary read for the HB is to press the play side gap, read the puller's block, and cut off the lead blocker's path into the second level.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, count the box defenders, if the defense stacks eight in the box or shows a heavy run blitz look this play loses its blocking advantage and gets stuffed at the line. Watch for linebackers keying the pulling guard, a user-controlled linebacker who reads the puller quickly and shoots the gap can blow up the play before the lead blocker arrives. Man coverage on the perimeter with no extra run support usually means the box is manageable, this is a good indicator the power run has a clean lane. Defenses that crash the edge with a defensive end or overhang player to defeat the kick-out block can force the HB to cut back, so watch for teams selling hard on edge containment. Zone fronts that flow hard to the play side without honoring cutback lanes can be gashed if the HB reads the backside cutback instead of forcing the designed hole.
Usage Tips
Run this against base fronts and light boxes where the defense has six or fewer defenders in the box, since Power O depends on winning the numbers game at the point of attack.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if both safeties are deep the box should be light enough to hit the power gap with numbers, if you see a safety creeping down expect an extra run fit and consider a hot route audible or checking to a different concept.
Use motion or a play fake off this look with PA Ctr Waggle or PA Boot to freeze linebackers who key on the pulling guard, since both plays share the same backfield action.
Pair Power O with HB Counter in the same set to keep the defense guessing on gap direction, running Counter once Power O has established downhill tempo forces linebackers to hesitate on flow reads.
Best called on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when you want to establish physicality and set up play-action shots later in the drive.
