PA Boot is a play-action rollout out of Pistol Ace Slot 12 personnel that pulls the QB out to the boundary while the offensive line sells run action. Off the play fake, the outside receiver runs a deep vertical clear-out and the inside receiver runs an over route across the middle to occupy the second level, while one TE releases on a corner route breaking to the sideline at intermediate depth and the other TE checks down on a flat route as the outlet. The primary read progression starts with the TE corner route as the boot rolls that direction, works down to the flat route TE as the underneath safety valve, and uses the crossing over route as a late-window backside option if the pocket collapses or the flat is taken away.

Defensive Reads

Check the safety alignment pre-snap, a two high shell that rotates down late is vulnerable to the corner route sitting in the vacated deep third. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they bite hard on the run fake the flat and crossing routes open up immediately for easy completions. Identify man coverage by looking for a defender shadowing the deep vertical clear-out receiver, this confirms the corner and flat combo will have soft coverage underneath. Look for a user controlled defender lurking in the shallow flat or spying the QB rollout, this is the biggest threat since it can jump both the flat route and the boot lane simultaneously. Cover 3 with a hard edge contain defender or a scraping linebacker shutting down the boot lane will kill this play, so have a quick checkdown or bail option ready if contain is not beaten.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or third and short to sell the run fake convincingly since the play action window is only effective if you have already established your ground game with HB Dive, HB Power O, or HB Counter from this same set.

Roll with the QB and get your eyes to the corner route first, it is the highest value throw against off coverage or single high shells that vacate the flat.

Hot route the flat TE deeper or convert to a drag if you see the defense sitting on the underneath flat with a linebacker spy, this opens up easy yardage against zone shells.

Pair this play with PA Ctr Waggle in your play calling sequence to keep defenders guessing on which direction the QB boots, forcing linebackers to hesitate on run fits.

Avoid calling this against heavy interior blitz packages since the rollout mechanic slows your protection and exposes the QB to backside pressure if the fake does not hold the front seven.
