HB Counter out of Pistol Ace Slot with 12 personnel is a designed power run play that pulls blockers across the formation to create a lead path for the HB. The offensive line shows down blocks at the point of attack while a backside guard and the fullback (or extra TE) pull to lead through the hole, creating a misdirection look as the HB steps one way before cutting back on the counter path. This is a pure run play with no pass option shown in the diagram, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the initial hole to hold the linebackers, then follow the pulling blockers and read the lead blocker's kick out block on the edge defender before deciding whether to bend it inside or bounce it outside.
Defensive Reads
Watch for linebacker depth at the snap: if they are stacked tight to the line, they can beat the pulling blockers to the hole before the counter develops. Look for safety rotation pre-snap; a single high safety often signals man coverage or a light box, which favors the counter's cutback lanes. Identify defensive ends that crash hard inside on the initial flow since that is exactly what counter action is designed to exploit with the kick out block. User-controlled defenders shooting gaps or spying the backfield can blow up the counter before the pulling linemen get set, so be ready to cut it back immediately if you see penetration. Against a nano blitz or edge pressure package, this play can get negative yardage quickly since the counter takes longer to develop than a straight dive or power play.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage when defenses are not yet keyed on the run.
Check the box count before the snap: if the defense has six or fewer in the box, this play has a numbers advantage for the counter action.
Motion or shift into different formations before the snap to see if linebackers or safeties flow with the shift, exposing man coverage or overaggressive run fits.
Pair this with HB Power O and Strong Power in the same drive to condition the defense to fill fast, then hit HB Counter again once they start crashing hard to one side.
If the defense shows a heavy blitz look pre-snap, consider hot routing a TE to chip the edge rusher to give the counter path more time to develop.
Use PA Ctr Waggle later in the series off the same look to punish linebackers who key run fits too aggressively on counter action.
