Breakdown

Flood from Pistol Ace Slot floods one side of the field with three vertical stems stacked at different depths, a classic Cover 3 beater concept. The backside receiver runs a deep dig across the field while the two receivers to the flooded side stack a deep out, a corner route, and an underneath flare from the backfield to that same side, creating a high low low read on the flat defender and deep third defender. The QB progression reads the flat defender first: if he sits, throw the corner route over him, if he widens with the flare, work back to the shallow flat route, with the backside dig as the last resort against a busted zone.

Defensive Reads

Identify the deep third defender to the flood side before the snap, if he is aligned too wide the corner route sits in the void behind him. Watch the flat or curl to flat defender, his depth at the snap tells you whether the underneath flare or the corner route will be open first. Against Cover 3 this concept overloads the numbers advantage, so a user spying the flat area is the main threat to jump the flare route. Man coverage with no safety help over the top shuts this down quickly since all three flood routes break the same direction and get picked off by trailing defenders. Watch for a linebacker blitz off the edge to the flood side, since that removes the shortest checkdown option and forces the QB to hold the ball longer against the deep routes.

Usage Tips

Run this on 2nd and medium to long when you expect zone coverage, especially Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with a single high safety. Pre-snap, check the corner alignment to the flood side, if he is playing off with outside leverage the corner route will win over the top. Hot route the backside dig receiver into a deeper post if you see two high safeties rotating to single high after the snap, since the dig loses value against man coverage. Pair this with PA FL Stretch and PA Boot from the same set so the defense has to respect play action out of the same personnel and formation look before you come back to the pure drop back flood. Use max protect or slide protection to the flood side if the defense shows an overload blitz look, since the flat route also serves as a checkdown against pressure.
