HB Dive out of Pistol Ace Slot with 12 personnel is a downhill run play that sends the HB straight through the A gap behind the pistol alignment. The diagram shows a tight interior blocking surface with both tackles, guards and center working double teams and combo blocks up front, while the two receivers stay uninvolved as decoys to hold defenders wide. This is a pure run play with no play-action or RPO element, designed to attack light boxes and out leverage slower interior defenders with a quick vertical burst. Primary read is the A gap first, bouncing to either B gap based on the flow of the down blocks from the guards and center.

Defensive Reads

Key the middle linebacker depth pre-snap, if he is sitting shallow at five yards or less he can beat the dive to the mesh point and blow it up before the double team sets. Watch for a stacked nose tackle or zero technique aligned directly over center, this alignment is the toughest matchup for the interior combo block and can collapse the dive for a loss. Identify if the defense is in a run blitz look with linebackers creeping to the line pre-snap, since HB Dive has no answer for extra gap pressure without a hot route audible. Look for user controlled defenders spying the A gap immediately after snap, a smart human defender will sit the dive and force a cutback that the offense cannot control manually. This play struggles against heavy fronts with four down linemen and a stacked backer, but it eats up light boxes out of two high safety shells where teams sell out to stop the pass.

Usage Tips

Call HB Dive when you see a light box with six or fewer defenders in the run fit, since the interior double teams can only handle so much extra beef at the second level.

Check safety depth pre-snap, if both safeties are sitting deep in a two high shell that usually means a lighter box and a green light to run this A gap dive.

Use the RB hot route to jab a quick jump cut if the MLB is stacked directly over center, since that forces the dive to bounce off the double team into the adjacent gap.

Pair this with Freeze Option Rt and Speed Option Wk from the same Ace Slot set to keep defenders honest, since the mesh point looks identical pre-snap and forces linebackers to hesitate on their run fit trigger.

Best used on first and second down inside the tackles when you need a positive gain, and avoid it against heavy blitz packages that stack extra bodies in the box since there is no RPO bailout built in.
