Breakdown

HB Dive out of Pistol Ace Slot is a straight downhill run play with the HB lined up behind the QB and taking the handoff on a direct dive path through the interior. The diagram shows a tight seven-man surface at the line with two receivers running vertical stem routes to hold corners and safeties, but there are no route combos in play since this is a pure run design. Blocking is a standard interior man/gap scheme with the line working double teams and combo blocks up front to seal the first level, and the primary read is simply which gap opens fastest between the guards and center as the HB presses the mesh point.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is in a base 4-3 or 3-4 look with linebackers stacked tight since this tells you how crowded the interior gaps will be. Watch safety depth before the snap, a single high safety or both safeties backed off signals they are not worried about the run and will leave the box light for the dive. Post-snap, key the defensive tackles and mike linebacker fill, if they get skinny and shoot gaps quickly this play can get stuffed for negative yardage. User-controlled defenders flying downhill from depth (lurking linebackers or a spy) are the biggest threat to blow this play up before the back reaches the second level. This play struggles against heavy blitz packages sending extra defenders into the A and B gaps, but it beats light boxes and defenses playing pass-heavy shells expecting play-action.

Usage Tips

Use HB Dive on early downs when you want to establish tempo and bait aggressive defenders into overpursuing on outside runs later in the drive.

Check the defensive front pre-snap and if you see a light box (six or fewer defenders), this is a green light to hand it off without checking to a pass.

If the defense shows a stacked box or a linebacker creeping down into the A gap, consider audibling to HB Slam or Strong Power to attack a different gap or add an extra blocker.

Pair this play with PA Ctr Waggle or PA Boot later in the series since the play-action fakes off similar mesh point action will hold linebackers and force them to respect the run first.

Use in short yardage or goal line situations where a quick decisive north-south burst through the middle is more valuable than trying to bounce it outside.
