This is a gap scheme run play designed to beat light boxes and overly aggressive man coverage on the outside, with the primary read being the initial crease created by the double team at the point of attack before working backside if the playside gap is clogged.

Defensive Reads

Watch for the mike linebacker filling the A gap immediately after the snap, if he reads dive fast this play gets capped for minimal gain. Identify base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts with a true nose or defensive tackle head up on center, as heavy interior alignments can clog the intended gap before the double team develops. Look for safeties staying at depth in a two high shell, since they cannot immediately fill against the run and give the offensive line more time to seal the point of attack. Beware of user controlled linebackers spying the mesh point, a quick trigger there can blow up the play before the fullback finishes his lead block. Goal line or heavy run blitz packages with extra defenders stacked in the box are the biggest counter to this play, since the numbers advantage disappears.

Usage Tips

Use this play against defenses showing six or fewer defenders in the box since the tight formation removes an extra blocker advantage for the defense on early downs.

Check the linebacker depth before the snap, if the mike and will are sitting shallow expecting run blitz, this play still has enough double team power up front to move the pile.

Mix HB Slam with HB Dive and HB Power O from the same set to keep the defense guessing on gap versus power blocking, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits.

Pair this run with PA Ctr Waggle or PA Boot on the next snap to punish defenses that start crashing down hard on the dive action.

Stick to running this on early downs or short yardage third down situations where a low risk, high floor gain is more valuable than a home run shot.
