Breakdown

PA FL Stretch is a play-action shot play off outside zone stretch blocking, giving the offensive line a hard flow to sell the run before the QB pulls and sets up in the pocket. The route concept stacks four verticals-based routes to one side: a deep go from the outside receiver, a corner route from the inside slot, and two receivers running vertical stems that break outward, with the closest one to the formation sitting into a flat/out breaking route underneath. The primary read progression starts with the deep corner route as the first read since it attacks the seam vacated by the play-action bite, then works down to the underneath out route as the checkdown against zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Watch the strong safety and weak safety depth before the snap since rotation toward the run action pre-snap signals man coverage underneath the verticals. If the linebackers step up hard on the zone run fake, the intermediate window behind them opens for the corner route read. Cover 3 with a deep half sinking defender can undercut the deep go route, so be ready to climb the progression to the corner route instead. User controlled defenders sitting in a deep third or playing lurk on the corner route flat itzone can jump this route combo, so check the flat defender leverage before throwing. Press man corners can disrupt the timing on the outside go route, making the underneath out route the safer answer against man beaters with tight coverage at the line.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs when the defense has been gashed by your outside zone run game so linebackers and safeties bite hard on the play-action fake.

Check pre-snap for single high safety looks since that tells you the corner route has one-on-one leverage against the deep half defender.

Use the underneath out route as a built-in answer against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells where the corner gets squeezed by two deep defenders.

Pair this play in sequence with HB Power O or HB Counter earlier in the drive so the play fake carries real weight against aggressive run fits.

Hot route the closest receiver into a quick option or slide route if you are facing a Cover 0 blitz look and need an immediate answer before the shot routes develop.
