Breakdown

Cover 2 Man from the Nickel 3-3 shows two deep safeties splitting the field while five underneath defenders play tight man coverage on the receivers and backs, with three defenders shown mirroring their assignments in the short zone. This is a man coverage shell designed to lock down quick game and shallow route combos while keeping two safeties over the top to protect against deep shots. There is no blitz shown in the diagram, so the four man pass rush must win on its own while the defense reads the quarterback's eyes from the underneath man defenders outward to the safeties.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check receiver splits and bunch formations, since tight bunches can create natural rub routes that beat man coverage underneath. Watch for the offense to attack the seams between the two deep safeties, since Cover 2 Man is vulnerable to well timed post routes and deep crossers that split the safeties. Post-snap, key any linebacker or nickel defender in man coverage against a shifty slot receiver, since this matchup is the first place a smart quarterback will attack. This shell holds up well against quick outs and hitches because of the man coverage underneath, but it can be exposed by rub route concepts and pick plays designed to beat man to man. Watch the running back out of the backfield, since if a linebacker is covering him in man and gets beat on a wheel or angle route it creates an explosive play against the two deep safety shell.

Usage Tips

Use this call on early downs or third and medium when you expect the offense to try to isolate a slot receiver or tight end against a linebacker in man coverage.

Pre-snap, identify if the offense is running mesh or shallow drag concepts, since the underneath defenders in man will have to fight through traffic and can lose contain.

Combine this with Tampa 2 or Cover 2 Drop in the same set to disguise whether you are playing true man under two deep or a zone shell, keeping the quarterback guessing.

User the deep half safety to the side of the offense's best deep threat and let the AI handle the other half, since the two deep safeties are shown splitting the field evenly.

Mix in Cover 1 Robber Press from this set as a change up so the offense cannot key on the two deep safety shell every snap.
