Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check the safety alignment for two high versus one high shells since this look often shows a single deep safety rotating to a deep third alongside the two cornerbacks. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop into the hook zone since he is your primary defender against crossing routes and drag concepts designed to sit underneath the linebackers. Watch for the nickel corner's flat drop against flood concepts, since three level flood routes to one side can stress the flat and deep third simultaneously if he is late getting width. This shell is vulnerable to well timed seam routes against the hook defenders if the underneath zone droppers get too aggressive squeezing shallow crossers, so keep eyes on the number two receiver's vertical push. Blitz packages that pull a linebacker out of coverage weaken this shell, so if the offense sees pressure paired with Cover 3 Drop, expect a hole in the underneath zone that quick game concepts can exploit.
Usage Tips
Bait the quarterback into throwing hitches or curls into the flat zones since the underneath defenders sit and read the quarterback's eyes rather than chasing receivers vertically.
Use this on early downs or second and long when you expect the offense to attack deep since the three deep defenders provide strong protection against go routes and posts.
Pair Cover 3 Drop with Cover 3 Sky Drop KO in your play-calling sequence so offenses cannot key the flat defender's leverage pre-snap, keeping the picture disguised until after the snap.
Mix in LB Blitz 1 or Nickel LB Blitz from the same formation on money downs so the offense respects the run through and cannot sit on the zone drops every play.
Motion check the nickel corner's flat responsibility pre-snap against bunch or stack formations to confirm he can get proper depth and width before the ball is snapped.
