SS Mike Blitz brings the strong safety off the edge through the A-gap area along with the Mike backer, stacking five rushers at the second and third level for a five-man house call. Both outside linebackers carry the outside receivers vertically in man coverage while the slot corner and remaining underneath defender wall off the short middle, leaving the deep middle and seams exposed behind the blitz. This is a man-beater blitz designed to win with pressure before the quarterback can climb the pocket, so the primary read is simply whether the extra rushers get home before any hot route or quick slant beats the man coverage underneath.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check the strong safety alignment and depth of the Mike linebacker since both are showing blitz and tipping man coverage behind them. Look at the running back's pass protection assignment, if he checks the blitz and stays in to block, your extra rusher is neutralized and you should bail to a coverage call. Post-snap, key the quarterback's eyes for a quick hot route or slant to the boundary, since the underneath defenders are in tight man with no safety help over the top. This blitz gets shut down by max protect schemes and RPOs with quick bubble reads that exploit the vacated flat. It wins against empty formations and shotgun spread teams that rely on timing throws, since the interior pressure disrupts the quarterback's rhythm before receivers separate.
Usage Tips
Call this on passing downs where you expect a quick game or shotgun spread look, since the blitz timing is designed to beat three and five step drops. Check the offensive protection pre-snap: if the running back is releasing into a route instead of staying in to block, you have a favorable numbers advantage off the edge. User the SS or Mike defender through his gap immediately after the snap rather than reading blocks, since hesitation kills the timing of this five-man pressure. Pair this with Cover 1 Robber Press or Cover 1 Contain Spy earlier in a series so the offense cannot key blitz off your safety depth, then mix in SS Mike Blitz once they settle into hot routes. Avoid calling this into empty backfield sets or against teams that consistently slide protection toward the boundary, since that leaves your interior rush blocked and your coverage on an island.
