This is a zone beater killer rather than an offensive concept, and the primary read progression for the defense is to identify the number two receiver's vertical release, trigger the underneath linebackers to their landmarks first, then work outside to help the corners squeeze any flat or curl routes before finally checking back to the deep half safeties over the top.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and corner alignment: if both safeties are shaded deep and corners are playing off with outside leverage, you are likely seeing this exact Cover 2 Drop shell. Post-snap, watch the middle linebacker's drop; if he sinks straight down the pipe, he is protecting the deep middle void that both safeties leave open between the numbers. This shell shuts down flat routes, curls, and shallow crossers thanks to the three-linebacker underneath wall, but it is exposed to seam routes and posts that split the safeties before they gain width. Man beaters like slants and quick outs to the flat will struggle against the underneath zone integrity, so expect success only on well-timed corner routes or deep out-and-ups that attack the sideline behind the corner's zone. User the deep safety over the tight end or slot receiver's vertical stem to close the seam, since AI safety pursuit can be late getting over the top against skinny posts.

Pre-snap, identify if the offense is running four verticals or double moves, because Cover 2 Drop is vulnerable to seam routes that split the two deep safeties before they can widen.
Hot route the flat defenders to sink slightly deeper if you anticipate corner routes or sideline comebacks attacking the void behind the corners.
Pair this call with Tampa 2 in your play-calling sequence so the offense cannot key on your middle linebacker's depth, since Tampa 2 sends that same defender vertically instead of horizontally.
