LB Cross 3 is a Cover 3 zone blitz concept out of the Nickel 3-3-5 that combines a line stunt up front with a three deep, four under zone shell behind it. The stunting defensive linemen crash and loop to confuse the offensive tackles and guards while a linebacker crosses through the opposite gap to create a free rusher off the edge or through the interior. Since this is a zone coverage call and not a man beater, your primary read progression starts with identifying if the quarterback is stepping up into the pocket or bailing to the boundary, then working from the crossing rusher's pressure to the underneath zone defenders squeezing shallow crossers and curl routes.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth: if both safeties sit at 10 to 12 yards with a single deep third look, this Cover 3 shell is disguised well and the stunt should get home before deep routes develop. Watch the running back's alignment and release pattern, since check release backs into the flat zone can expose the underneath defender the crossing linebacker vacates. Post-snap, key the quarterback's eyes on any deep out or comeback route breaking toward the sideline, as the deep third defender to that side must stay disciplined and not bite on double moves. This play gets shut down by quick game triangle reads (flat, curl, corner) since the crossing linebacker's gap vacancy can be exploited before the stunt develops, so avoid calling it against teams spamming three step drops. Beats man beater concepts and mesh crosses well because the underneath zone defenders sit in throwing lanes, but watch for user controlled receivers sitting down in the seam against your linebacker zone drops.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or second and medium when you expect base run or quick game concepts, since the line stunt can get gashed by outside zone if the defense overcommits inside.
Check the offense's formation pre-snap for trips or bunch sets that stress the boundary defender, and be ready to adjust the flat zone defender's leverage with a pre-snap shift if you see stack releases.
Use the crossing linebacker as a spy trigger against mobile quarterbacks by manually spying with him instead of sending him on the stunt if you diagnose a designed QB run pre-snap.
Pair LB Cross 3 with Cover 3 Drop and Cover 3 Sky Drop KO in your call sequence so the offense sees the same Cover 3 shell but cannot key on the stunt timing, keeping their protection identification guessing.
Mix in Overload Blitz 3 or SS Mike Blitz after a few reps of LB Cross 3 so the offensive line starts anticipating pressure from the wrong gap, opening up coverage sacks and forcing bad throws into your underneath zones.
