Nickel LB Blitz is a five-man pressure package out of the Nickel 3-3-5 that sends both inside linebackers and a nickel defender downhill while dropping the remaining defenders into a shell behind them. The diagram shows the two middle blitzers crashing off the same gap with one working an outside contain angle and the other shooting straight upfield, while the flat defender to the near side drives hard downhill to close on the running back or shallow crosser. This is a pressure look designed to disrupt the quarterback's timing rather than a coverage-based zone or man beater, so the primary read is getting immediate eyes on the running back's blitz pickup and the quarterback's ability to get the ball out before the interior rush arrives.
Defensive Reads
Watch the offensive line splits pre-snap, wide splits usually signal the offense expects pressure and may have a quick screen or hot route ready. Key the running back's eyes and hips at the snap, if he sits in the backfield scanning for work he is picking up the blitz and your interior rush has a clean lane. Track the quarterback's first read, if he immediately looks to the flat or a quick out route the underneath blitzer closing that space should disrupt the throw. This look is vulnerable to hot routes into the vacated middle zone and to screens away from the blitz side, so if the offense audibles to a bubble screen or slip screen be ready to diagnose and rally fast. Avoid this call against empty backfield sets with a mobile quarterback who can escape the pocket and extend plays outside the rush lanes.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or third and short when you expect a quick game-based passing attack that relies on rhythm throws. Check the running back's alignment pre-snap because if he stays in to block you have a numbers advantage up front, but if he releases into a route you need to account for someone picking up the blitz. Hot route the outside cornerback into a deeper zone drop if you are worried about a nine route or deep out beating your shell over the top. Pair this with Cover 2 Drop or Cover 3 Drop on neighboring snaps so the offense cannot key blitz frequency off your pre-snap alignment. Use this on third and long against shotgun spread sets where the quarterback has to hold the ball for a deeper route to develop.
