Defensive Reads
Read the two inside gray defenders first since their cross-drop into the hook/curl zones is designed to squeeze shallow crossers and dig routes over the middle. Watch the purple flat defenders closely, since they are responsible for jumping quick game route combos like slants and flat routes before receivers get into the boundary. This shell struggles against underneath option routes and RPO packages that attack the LB level quickly, since the quarter defenders are focused on the vertical stem. Man beater route combos with option routes (like curl-flat or spot concepts) can create seams before the zone fully rotates, so watch for early separation on the snap. Post-snap, key the outside quarter defenders' depth, if they bite too hard on double moves or play-action, deep shots down the sideline can exploit the seam behind the flat defenders.

Call this on early downs or after you bait the offense into a play-action shot, since the four deep quarters eliminate explosive plays down the field.
