CB Bench Sim 2 is a simulated pressure package out of the Nickel 2-4 Load Dbl Mug set that shows a mugged look at the line before bailing into a two deep zone shell. Both corners on the play side and backside walk up to the line as if blitzing, then bench out into shallow zone drops (the cyan angled routes bending outward), while the two deep safeties rotate into deep half coverage across the top. Underneath, the linebackers and a defensive lineman drop into short zone (the white and olive drops), creating a Cover 2 style zone beater designed to disguise pressure while still dropping five into coverage. The primary read for the defense is to identify verticals immediately, since the deep halves are on top of any go routes while the shallow benching corners rob quick outs and slants underneath.
Pre-snap, identify the two corners mugged near the line as a blitz indicator, but recognize this look can bench into zone rather than bring pressure. Watch the safety alignment: if both safeties are deep and aligned to rotate into two deep halves, this is your confirmation of the Cover 2 disguise rather than true man or blitz. Post-snap, key the corners immediately for their bench technique, since they are not blitzing but sinking into shallow zone to rob out and curl routes. This shell is vulnerable to seam routes and deep crossers that split the two safeties, so route combos attacking the middle of the field between the benching corners and the deep safeties can exploit the coverage. Hard play-action or RPO reads that hold the underneath zone defenders can also open throwing lanes before the shallow drops settle.
Use this play on early downs when you expect the offense to test the perimeter with quick game concepts like hitches, slants, or stick routes, since the benching corners are designed to jump those exact throws. Show the mugged corner alignment pre-snap to bait the quarterback into thinking man press or blitz is coming, then rely on the zone drop to disguise the coverage post-snap. Pair this with Cover 1 LB Blitz or Blitz Loop Sim 2 from the same set so quarterbacks cannot key on corner alignment alone to diagnose pressure versus coverage. Avoid calling this on obvious deep shot downs since the deep halves leave intermediate seams open if the underneath zone drops get out of sync. Mix in Nickel Sim 2 in the same game plan to keep quarterbacks guessing between different simulated pressure shells with similar pre-snap looks.
