Nickel Sim 2 is a simulated pressure package out of the 2-4 Load Dbl Mug front that disguises a DB blitz behind a Cover 2 shell. At the snap the two Mug linebackers drop into underneath zones (shown by the red arrows sinking to shallow landmarks) while the slot corner off the left edge fires upfield as a blitzer, and the off-corner on the right side also creeps in for a delayed blitz off the edge. Both deep safeties rotate to the outside thirds/halves to cap the field, leaving the middle of the field defended by the sim-dropping linebackers rather than a true rush, making this a zone-based blitz designed to bait the quarterback into a hot throw before pressure arrives.
Pre-snap, check corner depth and safety width, if both safeties are already leveraged to the numbers this Cover 2 shell is live and deep sideline throws are protected. Watch for the slot defender crashing hard off the ball at the snap, that is your designed blitzer and the quickest source of pressure. Key the two Mug linebackers immediately after the snap, if they sink to shallow hook or curl zones instead of rushing, the play is in simulated pressure mode and shooting a receiver into that vacated area behind them will hurt the offense. This coverage struggles against trips or bunch formations that overload one underneath zone defender, so shift a linebacker or spy pre-snap if the offense stacks receivers to one side. Beware of user-controlled quarterbacks who scramble away from the delayed edge blitzer, since the late-arriving rusher can be shaken with lateral movement before the pocket fully collapses.
Call this on early downs or 2nd and medium when you expect the offense to take a shot down the field, since the deep safeties are already rotated to protect over the top. Disguise the blitz by holding your Mug linebackers at the line pre-snap and delay their zone drop as long as possible to sell run or man blitz. Use the DB blitzer off the slot as your primary pressure piece and spy the running back with a linebacker if you see check release routes, since the shallow zone droppers can be beaten underneath by quick outs and flares. Pair this call with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 1 LB Blitz from the same set so quarterbacks cannot key blitz timing off DB alignment alone. Bring this look on 3rd and long after showing Blitz Loop 3 or Blitz Loop 0 earlier in the series to keep the offense guessing between man pressure and zone sim looks.
