Breakdown

HB Smash out of Full House 21 personnel is a classic smash concept pass play designed to attack Cover 2 shells. Off the diagram, the inside receiving option runs a hitch or flat route to the corner (low), while the outside route breaks toward the sideline on a corner route (high), creating a high low stretch on the flat defender and deep corner defender. The primary read progression starts with the corner route since it exploits the seam between the corner and safety in two deep shells, then works down to the shorter hitch or flat route underneath if the corner is capped.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify two deep safeties splitting the field evenly, this is the biggest indicator of Cover 2 and confirms the smash concept will have a natural window on the corner route. Watch cornerback depth at the snap, if the corner sinks with the corner route and the flat defender squats on the underneath route, that is textbook Cover 2 and the quarterback should climb the progression to the corner route. Man coverage with a single high safety takes away the natural leverage advantage of the smash concept, look for the underneath route to work as a quick separation option against man beaters instead. User controlled defenders sitting in a lurk position near the numbers can jump the corner route late, if you see a defender shading toward that route pre-snap, check down early to the underneath option. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge will speed up the throw window, in that case prioritize the quicker underneath route over waiting on the corner route to develop.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or third and short to medium since the underneath option gives you a safe checkdown if the corner route is covered.

Check the pre-snap safety alignment first. Two deep safeties with corners playing off confirms Cover 2 and tells you the corner route will have room to sit down over the flat defender.

Hot route the underneath receiver into a quick out or speed out if you see a squatting cornerback jumping the flat, this keeps the smash concept alive against Cover 2 zone drops without changing personnel.

Pair this play with Curls or Slants from the same Normal Wide set to keep the defense guessing between smash concepts and quick game underneath throws, this forces linebackers and corners to respect multiple route depths.

Use HB Slam or HB Sweep out of the same formation on run downs to sell run action, then come back to HB Smash on obvious pass downs once the defense starts sitting on the run fits.
