Breakdown

HB Misdirection is a run play out of the Full House 21 personnel set that shows the HB starting one direction before cutting back across the formation on a designed misdirection path, as shown by the diagonal red run line crossing behind the offensive line. The line shows a standard run blocking scheme with the TE and both backs aligned tight to sell play action or lead blocking before the ball carrier redirects. This is not a pass concept, there are no route lines shown for receivers, so this is purely a misdirection run designed to attack defenders who flow hard with the initial backfield action. The primary read is the frontside linebacker flow: if the defense overruns the initial fake, cut back through the vacated backside gap.

Defensive Reads

User the play side linebacker and force him to respect both directions before committing, since misdirection runs live or die on linebacker discipline. Keying the backfield too fast is the classic mistake defenders make against this concept, so spy the HB's hips rather than his first step. This run struggles against gap-sound defenses that stay home in their run fits, particularly 4-3 Under fronts with disciplined linebackers who do not flow on the snap. Aggressive blitz packages and nano blitzes can actually blow this play up if the blitzer's path crosses the cutback lane before the HB gets there. Look for defenses that overuse quick pursuit flow or aggressive user linebacker crashes, since that tendency is precisely what this misdirection design is built to exploit.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short to keep the defense honest against your play action shots from Full House. Watch pre-snap for linebackers cheating toward the strength of the formation, that aggressive flow is exactly what this play punishes. Use manual motion presnap sparingly here since the misdirection timing depends on the OL and lead blockers selling the initial direction convincingly. Pair this with PA Power O and Counter Lead in the same set so the defense cannot key on backfield action without guessing wrong on tempo. Against teams that consistently crash their linebackers on run tendencies, sequence this after two or three hard downhill runs like HB Slam or Power O to maximize the cutback lane.
