This is a downhill run play built to create a numbers advantage at the point of attack, not a play-action or RPO look.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a stacked box with eight defenders and a single high safety, which signals the defense is selling out to stop the run and may require a check to a pass concept like Slants or Curls. Identify linebacker depth before the snap: linebackers playing downhill at four yards or closer are cheating on run fits and will beat the pulling guard to the hole. Look for a scraping mike linebacker or user controlled defender flowing hard playside, since that is the primary threat to blow up the pulling guard's kick out block. If the defense shows a 4-3 under front with the strong safety walked down, expect the edge defender to squeeze hard, which favors bouncing the run outside off the fullback's block. Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with light boxes are the best matchups for this run since it removes an extra run defender, while Cover 0 or Cover 1 with a robber can stack the box and shut down interior lanes.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs like first and ten or second and short when defenses expect balance out of Full House personnel.

Check the box count pre snap: if the defense has six or more in the box with no extra safety help deep, the pulling guard can still win one on one against a stacked front, but consider audibling if you see an extra defender walked down.

Use the fullback lead block as your key: if the fullback gets immediate penetration, bounce the run outside off the pulling guard's path instead of forcing it inside.

Pair Power O with PA Power O in the same set to keep linebackers honest, since the play-action look off identical backfield action punishes teams that key run fits too fast.

Mix in HB Misdirection or Counter Lead from this same formation to keep defenders flowing hard downhill, which sets up cutback lanes for Power O later in a series.
