Close Z Corner is a five-man protect pass concept out of Full House with 21 personnel. The Z receiver runs a corner route from the closed slot alignment, breaking outside past ten yards for the deep sideline throw, while the two backs stack behind the QB run flat/out routes to the boundary sides for underneath outlets. On the backside, a deep out route clears the flat while a shallow crosser occupies the middle of the field, giving the QB a full-field stretch. This is a man beater that isolates the corner route against outside leverage, with the primary read starting on the Z corner route and working down to the backside out and flat routes if the deep shot is covered.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the cornerback over the Z is playing press or off leverage, since off coverage with no deep safety help is the biggest tell that the corner route is live. Check safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety rotating hard to the corner side is your key that this route is covered and the QB should reset to the backside out or crossing route. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled defender lurking in the flat since that player can jump the flat routes from the backs and bait a quick throw into a pick. Cover 3 with a hard buzzing corner underneath can undercut the corner route, so key linebacker depth and flat defender reaction speed immediately after the snap. Man coverage with no deep safety help over the top is the ideal shell to attack, since the corner route creates natural separation against trail technique once the receiver breaks outside.
Usage Tips
Look for single high safety shells pre-snap since the corner route wants a cornerback playing outside leverage without deep help arriving in time.
Motion or check the flat routes into the boundary if you see a hard blitz look, since the backs release quickly and give you a fast outlet against pressure.
Use this on second and long or third and medium situations where a defense might sit in zone drops, letting the corner route work the seam between the flat defender and the deep third.
Hot route the backside out to a curl if you see a corner sitting low in a zone shell, this gives you a sit read against Cover 3 buzz.
Pair this with HB Slam or HB Draw earlier in a series to get linebackers creeping up before coming back to this play, since the run action sets up the corner route working behind a suckered underneath defense.
