HB Draw out of Full House Normal Wide shows a 21 personnel look with two backs stacked behind the QB and a TE tight to the formation, disguising a run behind what initially reads like a pass-heavy backfield. At the snap the offensive line sets up in a pass-blocking drop before engaging defenders in run blocks, luring the front seven upfield while the ball carrier waits for the delay handoff and follows his blockers through the middle of the line. This is a pure run play, not a pass or RPO, and the primary read is patience: let the draw develop, key the blocking flow, and cut to whichever gap the linebackers vacate as they bite on the pass-rush fake.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing a heavy blitz package or exotic pressure look, since those are the shells this play punishes hardest by letting rushers overcommit upfield. Check linebacker depth before the snap. Linebackers sitting shallow and reading the backfield will diagnose the draw quickly and fill the cutback lanes. Post-snap, key whether the defensive line is getting instant penetration. A disciplined three or four man rush that maintains gap integrity will stuff this run before it develops. Watch for a spy defender or a linebacker staying home instead of blitzing, since that player is the biggest threat to blow up the delayed handoff timing. If the defense shows zone coverage with linebackers dropping into shallow zones immediately, they are not respecting the run action and the draw can hit for explosive yardage before defenders reset.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or in second and long situations where defenses expect a dropback pass, since the pass-blocking mimicry sells the fake hardest against aggressive pass rush teams.
Watch for delayed linebacker reads before the snap. If the Mike and Will are creeping toward the line or showing blitz indicators, HB Draw is a great answer because it lets them run themselves out of the play.
Use the extra back in Full House to check blocking assignments manually if you see a nano blitz look, since the second back can be user-controlled to seal an unblocked rusher.
Pair this play with PA Middle or PA Power O from the same formation so the defense has to respect both the draw fake and the play-action shot, keeping linebackers frozen on subsequent snaps.
Avoid calling this against disciplined defenses that stay home on the draw, since teams that spy the QB or hold linebackers at the line will blow this up before the blockers can climb.
