Breakdown

WR DBL Shake is a play-action pass out of Full House Normal Wide that creates a flood concept to the right while stretching the field vertically on the left. Both outside receivers run Go routes up the sideline, the inline TE releases on a shallow out that breaks toward the boundary, and the right slot man runs a corner route that bends back across the middle after the play-action fake. Underneath, one back runs an Out toward the flat while the other stays in to help sell the run action, giving the quarterback a clear high-low read from the corner route down to the flat.

Defensive Reads

Check the safety alignment before the snap, a single deep safety signals man or Cover 3 which this play is designed to attack with the vertical Go routes. Watch the flow of the linebackers after the play-action fake, if they step up hard to defend the run the corner route and flat route will have wide open throwing lanes. Against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells, the deep Go routes are less effective since safeties can help over the top, so expect the quarterback to check down to the flat or out route. Look for a user-controlled defender sitting in a lurk position near the corner route landing spot, since that route settles in an area that a rover or hook defender can jump if the QB is late. If the defense brings a blitz off the edge, the shallow out from the tight end becomes a quick answer since the play-action fake will slow down initial pass rush recognition.

Usage Tips

Sell the play-action hard by holding the snap timing consistent with your run plays out of this Full House look so linebackers freeze on the fake.

Pre-snap, identify single-high safeties, if you see one deep defender the double Go routes on the outside will stress Cover 3 and Cover 1 defenders forced to run vertically with no help over the top.

Use the corner route as your first read against Cover 3, it settles into the seam-flat void that zone defenses leave open behind the corner and in front of the safety.

If the defense shows Cover 2 or two-high shells, work the underneath Out to the flat quickly since the deep Go routes will be capped by the safeties.

Pair this play with HB Slam or Power O earlier in a series so the defense respects the run fake, then call WR DBL Shake to punish linebackers who bite on run keys.
