Angle Swing out of Full House Normal Wide is a play action pass built around an angle route from the backfield combined with vertical clears from the outside receivers. From the diagram, the outside receiver runs a deep post breaking away from the flow while the far outside receiver runs a corner route to the boundary. Underneath, one receiver runs a deep in cut over the middle that crosses back to the flat, while the running back releases out of the backfield on an angle route working from the middle of the field out to the sideline. On the backside, a receiver runs a shallow drag across the field. The primary read progression starts with the angle route out of the backfield since it is the built in man beater against linebackers, then works to the drag underneath, then climbs to the deep in and post shots if the defense bites on the swing action.
Defensive Reads
Key the middle linebacker at the snap since he is the primary man responsible for the angle route out of the backfield. If you see a two high safety shell with linebackers playing tight underneath, expect the offense to lean on the angle and drag combo rather than the deep post and corner. Watch for a linebacker spy or a defender sitting in a hook zone since that alignment can jump the angle route and turn it into a turnover. Post-snap, track the safety over the top on the post route since a deep half safety rotating late can undercut that route if the quarterback holds it too long. Man coverage with no safety help over the drag is the biggest vulnerability, so a user controlled defender should be ready to lurk the shallow crossing route.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs or second and short to keep defenses honest with the run action baked into the play design.
Pre-snap, identify whether a linebacker or safety is matched on the running back since the angle route is designed to win against man coverage on backers.
If the defense shows zone shell with linebackers sitting in short zones, hot route the angle route to a flat or seam to avoid a crowded underneath area.
Pair this call with HB Sweep or HB Draw from the same set so the defense respects the run fake and widens the linebackers, opening up the angle and drag combo.
Against aggressive blitz looks, check for the drag route as your quick outlet since it crosses the field fast and beats man pressure off the edge.
