Cover 3 Cloud

Dime·3-2-6·Personnel not specified

Breakdown

Cover 3 Cloud is a zone coverage shell out of the Dime 3-2-6 set that drops three deep defenders and four underneath, with the cornerback to the cloud side rolling down to support the flat instead of playing deep third. The diagram shows both outside corners driving downhill on flat/curl responsibilities while three deep defenders (two safeties and a corner) split the field into thirds over the top, and the three-man rush crashes upfield off the snap with no delayed pressure shown. This is a zone beater against quick game and boundary throws since the cloud corner squats on hitches and speed outs, forcing the quarterback to hold the ball and throw over the top into a compressed deep third.

Defensive Reads

Watch for the flat defender squatting hard on any route breaking outside inside of ten yards, since the cloud corner is reading quick game first. Post-snap, key the deep third defenders' width; if they widen too fast chasing verticals, the middle of the field opens for in-breaking routes over the linebackers. This coverage struggles against four verticals and deep out combinations that stretch the three deep defenders horizontally, especially if the offense has a vertical stem running at the seam. Look for user-controlled defenders dropping into the flat late, which signals a lurk threat sitting on curl or drag routes designed to exploit the shallow zone beneath the cloud rotation. Man beater route combos with a quick option or slant/flat concept will not work here since the flat is already occupied, so identify pre-snap if the offense is running man beaters and expect them to struggle against this shell.

Usage Tips

Use this on passing downs when you expect quick game to the boundary since the cloud corner erases hitches, speed outs, and bubble screens to that side.

Pre-snap, identify which side the cloud rotation is set to and bait the quarterback into throwing hot to that flat, since the underneath defender is sitting on it.

Combine this with Cover 3 Hard Flat and Cover 3 Buzz Match in the same play-calling sequence so quarterbacks cannot key the flat defender's depth or leverage before the snap.

Against trips or bunch formations, check the cloud rotation to the strong side to take away quick out-breaking routes and force the offense to attack the single-high middle third.

Use disguised zone pressure sparingly with this coverage since the base three-man rush lacks disguise value, so mix in a zone blitz variant from this set like FS Zone Blitz or SS Zone Blitz to keep the offense honest on obvious passing downs.
