Zero Blitz

Dime·3-2-6·Personnel not specified

Breakdown

Zero Blitz out of the Dime 3-2-6 set brings all-out pressure with man coverage across the board and no deep safety help, hence the Cover 0 tag. The diagram shows two off-ball defenders (the circles) blitzing straight downhill through the interior gaps alongside the two linebackers (the squares), while the fifth underneath defender (the X to the left) crashes hard into the backfield on an angle, leaving the remaining defensive backs locked in press or tight man coverage with zero deep safety help. This is a pure blitz play designed to overload the box and force a quick throw or sack, with the primary read being whichever gap collapses first off the corner or interior rush before the quarback can climb the pocket.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check for tight bunch or stack formations that can pick your rushers or create natural rub routes against man coverage, since Zero Blitz has no zone help to clean up a blown assignment. Watch running back alignment, if the back stays in to block, your interior rush lanes will be contested and you need a secondary rusher to counter. Post-snap, key on any hot route where a receiver breaks off his route immediately, that is the offense identifying the blitz and looking for the quick throw beater. This call is vulnerable to slot fade or skinny post routes against your outside corners since they are on an island with no safety over the top. It shuts down max protect empty backfield sets and any offense that needs extra time to develop deep route combos, since the interior pressure collapses the pocket before routes can stretch the field vertically.

Usage Tips

Call Zero Blitz on third and long or in short yardage situations where the offense is likely to sit back in a five or seven step drop, since the extra rushers cut down on the time needed to get home. Check the offensive formation pre-snap, if you see max protect or extra blockers stay in, consider audibling out since Cover 0 leaves no deep help and any coverage bust turns into a house call. Use manual control on the fifth rusher (the X crashing at an angle) to time your blitz with the snap count and disguise which gap you are attacking. Pair this call with a static Cover 3 Cloud or Cover 4 Palms earlier in a series so the offense cannot key on the aggressive alignment before you dial up Zero Blitz. Avoid this play against spread empty formations with a mobile quarterback, since the lack of a spy or deep safety makes scramble drills and broken tackle plays extremely costly.
