SS Zone Blitz out of the Dime 3-2-6 set brings the strong safety off the edge as a fourth rusher while dropping into a zone shell behind it. The diagram shows three underneath defenders (the two square icons and the blitzing safety) crashing downhill with the SS looping in from depth, while both outside corners sink into their deep purple zones and the two deep safeties (blue ellipses) rotate to cover the middle and far hash. This is a zone blitz zone beater designed to disguise pressure while still holding three-level zone integrity, so the primary read is to identify the free rusher lane first and then work zone drop replacements underneath from the boundary in toward the vacated middle.
Defensive Reads
Watch the offensive line splits and running back alignment pre-snap, if the back stays in to block the SS blitz has a clean lane. Key the quarterback's eyes after the snap since he will likely look to the vacated zone the safety left on the blitz. This beats teams that rely on five-step drops or slower developing man concepts since the pressure disrupts timing before routes fully break. It is vulnerable to quick game and hitches thrown to the flat before the underneath defenders can rotate into their landmarks. Man beater and RPO heavy offenses that get the ball out in under two seconds can neutralize this pressure, so be ready to user the closest underneath defender to jump short routes.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or 2nd and medium when offenses expect a standard zone drop rather than pressure. Check pre-snap for empty or spread formations since the disguised safety blitz can get home quickly against five-man protections that do not account for the extra rusher. Use hot routes to widen your underneath zone defenders if you see stick or flat concepts trying to attack the vacated area the SS leaves behind. Pair this with Cover 3 Buzz Match or Cover 6 in your call sheet so the pre-snap look stays consistent and quarterbacks cannot key the blitz off safety depth. Save this for third and long or in the red zone where the extra pressure can force a quick, inaccurate throw into your underneath zone defenders.
