Okie Roll 2 is a zone coverage play out of the 3-2-6 Dime formation that drops into a Cover 2 shell with rolled coverage to one side. The diagram shows both deep safeties bracketing the field at depth, four underneath defenders spread across the middle and flats with red zone drop arrows, and the two outside cornerbacks sinking into their deep quarter-to-half zones. This is a zone beater designed to protect against vertical shots while squeezing the flats and intermediate hooks, with the primary read progression starting on the deep half safety fits before working down to the underneath zone defenders closing on crossing routes and flat concepts.
Watch for the offense attacking the flats immediately after the snap, since the rolled zone coverage can leave a half second window before underneath defenders reach their drop points. Key the deep safeties on play fakes, if they bite hard on run action you are vulnerable to double moves and post routes over the top. This shell holds up well against man beater route combos like slants and out routes, but struggles against high low stretches on the flat defenders if the offense sends two receivers to the same zone. Look for trips or bunch formations that overload one side, since the rolled coverage may not adjust fast enough to match numbers before the snap. If you see the quarterback checking to a screen or quick game concept, know that this call sacrifices box defenders for zone depth, so screens to the running back can hit for big yards if underneath defenders drift too deep too fast.
Call this on early downs or second and long when you expect play-action or shot plays, since the two deep safeties give you a natural Cover 2 shell to protect against verticals.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is stacking receivers to one side and shade your linebackers or user defender toward that rolled coverage look shown in the diagram.
Use the underneath zone defenders with red drop arrows to squeeze crossing routes and speed outs, then user the closest defender to the shallow crosser to disrupt timing.
Pair this call with Cover 2 Man or Tampa 2 Drop in the same set to disguise your shell, since all three start from similar Dime alignment and confuse the quarterback's pre-snap read.
Avoid calling this on third and short against heavy run personnel, since the deep zone drops leave light numbers in the box against inside runs.
