Cover 3 Lock

Dime·3-2-6·Personnel not specified

Breakdown

Cover 3 Lock is a zone defense out of the Dime 3-2-6 set that drops three deep defenders to divide the field into thirds while the underneath defenders play man match on the slot receivers and drop to spot-drop zones outside. The two outside corners lock onto the outside receivers in press or trail technique, while the two safeties and one linebacker sink into deep and intermediate zone drops to protect against verticals and crossers. This is a zone beater against man concepts and a solid defense versus deep shot plays, with the primary read progression starting on the outside WR1 and WR2 releases to confirm the corners are locked before working to the deep middle third for any leaking tight ends or backs.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify press alignment on your outside corners and know they are locked in man technique regardless of route, so bail early against speed releases and vertical stems. Key the safety depth before the snap, if both safeties are shaded to one side it signals extra help to that field and leaves the opposite deep third more vulnerable to a go route. Post-snap, watch the underneath zone defenders sink into their landmarks rather than following receivers, this defense is exposed to shallow drag routes and flat routes that sit underneath the zone drop. This shell is beaten by rub routes and mesh concepts that create natural picks against the locked corners, since there is no safety help underneath for those matchups. Look for the offense to attack the seam between the deep third defenders and the underneath zone droppers, that intermediate window is the primary soft spot in Cover 3 Lock against good route timing.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs or second and medium when you expect the offense to attack outside with go routes or comeback routes since the locked corners take away those isolation throws.

Check pre-snap for stacked or bunch formations, if the offense loads one side you may need to adjust the lock corner assignment with a manual shade to avoid a natural pick or rub route beating the technique.

Pair this call with Cover 3 Cloud or Cover 3 Buzz Match in your play-calling sequence so the offense cannot key on the deep third shell and start attacking the flats or shallow crossers that beat true Cover 3.

Hot route the underneath zone linebacker into a deeper drop on third and long to help double the deep middle third against posts and skinny posts, since the base drop can be light on top help.

Avoid this call against heavy 3x1 or 4 verticals looks unless you are confident in your lock corners winning at the catch point, since the underneath defenders are occupied with zone match rather than help over the top.
