Double Bracket is a Dime 3-2-6 man coverage call that shows five underneath defenders in tight man alignment with a deep middle safety (the olive zone circle) sitting over the top as a bracket defender. Three defenders align in a shallow line with straight vertical man drops (the red arrows), while two additional defenders sit just behind that line to double up on inside receivers, creating a two-deep bracket look on the slot and tight end. This is a pure man beater designed to blanket quick option routes and shallow crosses, with the primary read being the deep middle safety since he determines which side of the bracket is weakest and where the natural leverage advantage opens up for a corner or free safety blitz off the edge.
Defensive Reads
Key the two inside bracket defenders first, if the offense sends both slot receivers on option routes this coverage is built to smother that read. Watch for rub routes or pick concepts designed to spring one receiver free from the bracket, since tight man coverage is vulnerable to natural traffic near the line of scrimmage. Post-snap, track the deep middle safety's leverage, if he bites on a shallow crosser you can user flip him to cover a vertical shot down the opposite seam. This shell struggles against four verticals or double move concepts since the underneath defenders have no zone help outside their assigned man, so any receiver who wins early separation is a big play risk. Look for offenses to attack the flats immediately after the snap since the straight vertical drops shown on the diagram leave the shallow flat area thin before defenders can redirect.
Usage Tips
Use this pre-snap to identify if the offense is running two inside receivers on option or shake routes since the bracket defenders are built to double team exactly that kind of route concept.
Watch the safety alignment before the snap, if he cheats to one side you can user him late to jump an inside breaking route on the opposite hash.
This call is best on early downs or third and short when you expect quick game or slot fades, since the underneath defenders are locked in tight man and can get beat over the top on deeper double moves.
