Defensive Reads
Watch the offensive line splits and running back alignment pre-snap, tight splits or a back cheating toward a specific gap often signal where a hot route or check release will come from. Identify quick game concepts like slants and hitches before the snap since with zero deep help any completion in the short game can turn into a long gain if a defender misses a tackle. Post-snap, key the quarterback's eyes immediately, this blitz lives or dies on getting pressure before he can find the man beater versus your press coverage. This call gets exposed by play-action rollouts and screens because the aggressive downhill flow of the blitzers leaves no safety valve if the offensive line sells the run fake. Avoid this play against offenses that consistently show quick slot motion or stack releases designed to rub off press corners, since your man defenders have no help underneath or deep.
Usage Tips
Use Zero Blitz on third and long or in short yardage situations near the goal line where the offense needs extra time to develop routes downfield.
Check pre-snap for stack or bunch formations because it can create natural rubs that beat man coverage and free a receiver against your blitz.
Motion an offensive player before the snap to confirm true man coverage, if defenders shift with the motion you know the blitz and Cover 0 shell are live.
Pair this call with Cover 1 Robber Press or Cover 1 Contain Spy earlier in a series so the offense cannot key on the all-out pressure look based on personnel or splits.
User the most athletic blitzer off the edge and time the snap count to avoid neutral zone infractions while still disrupting the quarterback's launch point.
