Tampa 2 out of the 2-3-6 Will Dime set is a zone coverage shell built to protect against vertical shots while keeping the middle of the field capped. The two deep safeties bail to the numbers at depth while the middle linebacker (the olive drab defender) drops straight up the pipe to rob any deep in-cut or post, functioning as the classic Tampa 2 "hole" defender. Underneath, the four zone defenders (two gray, two teal) sink into hook and curl/flat zones with the two teal corners jumping outside routes near the boundary, and the four-man rush pressures the pocket to force a quick decision before the deep middle closes. This is a zone beater killer for teams that live on the four vertical seams or deep post shots, and the primary read is short to intermediate: crash any drag or curl route in front of the sinking linebackers before working outside to the flat defenders.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth: if both safeties are showing deep halves at 10 to 12 yards with a linebacker cheating toward the middle of the field, that confirms Tampa 2 shell. Post-snap, watch the middle linebacker's vertical drop; if he gets enough depth he will erase deep in-cuts, posts, and any seam route trying to split the safeties. This coverage is vulnerable to quick out routes and flat throws underneath the corners since the underneath zone defenders are focused on curl and hook areas rather than the boundary. Watch for user lurk from the sinking hook defenders on drag routes and crossers, since a skilled user defender can jump those throws if the quarterback is late reading the middle linebacker's drop. Against four verticals, the seam routes will be taken away by the deep safeties and the pipe defender, so route combinations that clear out the middle and attack the flat or intermediate outside zones are the counter.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or third and medium when you expect the offense to test the middle of the field with seam routes or posts, since the extra deep defender in the pipe erases those throws.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is running four verticals or double posts; if the formation looks pass heavy with stacked receivers, this shell shuts down the easy answer to those concepts.
User the middle linebacker in the pipe drop to manually rob any in-breaking route from the slot, then flip your attention to the flat defenders if the quarterback resets his eyes outside.
Mix this play into a sequence with Cover 2 Sink and Cover 2 Hard Flat from the same set so quarterbacks cannot key the middle linebacker depth pre-snap and guess the coverage.
Avoid calling this on third and long against mobile quarterbacks unless you spy or contain the edges, since the four man rush alone can be scrambled away from.
